Why you were special to me

Dear Auntie Phyl
Whenever I think of you, the simple adjective that comes to mind (in the most positive of ways) is big:  big smile, big heart, big laugh and big personality.
You were always good to be around.  When we were ‘little’, Dad would bring Ann & I to visit you and Uncle John in your Greenway house on occasion and we were always made to feel so welcome.  I remember being dead impressed that there was a Scalextric track built around the walls in (Ray’s?) bedroom.  When you’re 8 or so in the late 60’s, that was cutting edge on where it was at; a mum who would tolerate a permanent Scalextric track in the house.  (If that's not true; I apologise.  But it's what I'm pretty sure I remember.)
I think it was at your John’s wedding reception that I recall you demonstrating to the younger generation how partying was done.  Our Dad was/is a more (shall we say) reserved soul when it came to getting ‘down with the kids.’  It was a revelation that you could be old(er) and still enjoy dancing to music, loud music to boot, that your children liked.  And always that smile, always that laugh, always that heart.
Then when you had done your parenting bit with your own children, you looked after those who had looked after you when you were a child back in Keith Rd.  I always saw that as your big sister’s big heart doing the tough but honourable thing.  Doubtless not easy.  But definitely big.
We have been lucky have known you.  Thanks for all the wonderful memories.  Big and little.  But mainly big.  And all the better for it.
Love always, Cousin Fred’s son
Roy
